Man marries lover, ex-girl friend on same stage

VILLUPURAM (TAMIL NADU): Committing bigamy might be against the law and could even attract seven years imprisonment. But a cheeky 24-year-old man appears to have gotten away with marrying both his ex-girl friend and present lover simultaneously in a temple in G Ariyur village in Villupuram on Saturday night.
Ramesh, a life insurance agent exchanged garlands with his former lover Sathya (19) and also with his present girl friend Avarampoo (20) after his relationship with the two became public. He tied the mangalsutras pronouncing both as his wives at a simple wedding ceremony in Thirukoilyur Ulagalantha Perumal temple in the presence of relatives and friends of the three families.
It all began when Sathya hailing from Nathamur in Ulundurpet taluk approached the Thirukoilyur police station on Saturday evening alleging that Ramesh had refused to marry her after making her pregnant. She said she was acquainted with Ramesh during her frequent visits to her grandmother’s house in G.Ariyur. She revealed that the two were in love for the past two years and added that she was two months pregnant for which Ramesh was responsible.
The police invited members of both families to the station for discussion. Meanwhile, another woman, Avarampoo, hailing from the same locality, reached the police station along with scores of local people and claimed that Ramesh loved her and had promised to marry her. She sought the help of the police to unite her with her lover.
Interestingly the three, Ramesh, Sathya and Avarampoo, were related to one another. After marathon discussions, their relatives preferred to sort out the unusual situation amongst themselves without involving the police and decided to get both the women married to Ramesh.
Bigamy is a serious offence under IPC section 494. But for police to proceed against the offender, a complaint has to be registered against him. “We have not received a complaint in this case and both women appears to have agreed to the marriage,” said a police officer on condition of anonymity.
